Meningococcal Infections
and the Vaccine

The meningococcal bacteria causes serious infections including meningitis and bloodstream infections
Approximately 3000 people will develop a serious infection with this bacterium and 30% will be teens and young adults
Meningococcal infection can result in death in 10% of cases.
Of the survivors, 20% will suffer permanent damage such as deafness, seizures, mental retardation, or loss of fingers and toes

Protection with the meningococcal vaccine is the key to preventing this infection and its effects
